| SMALTO
& JONNY
"TNT Limited"
Fulfilment of any crime
Reliability. Secrecy. Efficiency."
This is the visiting card of the most inconsequent
criminal pair who is owner of the most rambling illegal firm ever existed.
Smalto & Jonny: the worse-assorted couple of
the history of organized delinquency. A pair of unhinged criminals, living
in an obsolete tank, whose actions develop in a surrealist atmosphere rich
in any kind of scoundrels.
Smalto is an ex-colonel radiated from the army,
Jonny is his ex-orderly. The first is slim, nervously determined and ready
to accomplish all possible crimes in order to emulate the great achievements
of the British mercenaries’ mythical commandos. The second is a gigantic
dunce who stumbles against his own feet, responsible for all the scrapes
which unavoidably condemn all adventures to failure.
No other character could endure the tenth part of
the blows that they regularly receive: bursting cars, tumbles, bombs’ rains
overwhelm them, according to a pure slapstick spirit.
There is no hope for the two characters who, crime
after crime, will go around the world: they will meet traffickers in arms
and smugglers, they will find themselves in the claws of a Transylvanian
lycantropist or in the clutches of American gangsters, surrounded by a
cynical mankind who will always have the better of them.
"Smalto & Jonny" was created in 1976 by G. Cavazzano
and G. Pezzin in the pages of "Il Mago", a very important Italian cartoon
magazine: It tells the story of two ex-mercenaries and of their surrealistic
and grotesque adventures, rich in troubles, mishaps and unforeseen events.
Giorgio Cavazzano was born in Venice in 1947. At
the age of 14 he starts to work as inker and in 1966 he begins to create
his own "disneyan" stories. After 30 years of activity C. is an undisputed
master of international disneyan cartooning and he influenced two generations
of draughtsmen and readers. C. is a swift and versatile author and he has
to his credit many humorous series.
Giorgio Pezzin was born in Mestre in 1949: Since
1974 he is a well estimeed scenarist and he contributes to the Italian
Walt Disney Company. From his long and fruitful artistic collaboration
with G. Cavazzano many Topolino & Co. stories were born. Perhaps there
is not any moral in their stories: the only sure thing is that crime does
not reward maybe, but it has never been so amusing.
